Martin Ulrich (born December 16, 1969 in Vienna ) is a former Austrian ice hockey player and current coach , who during his career played for the Adler Mannheim , Berlin Capitals and DEG Metro Stars in the German Ice Hockey League , among others . Ulrich has been the head coach of the Austrian U18 national team since October 2009.
Career
The 1.88 m tall defender began his career at Wiener EV , for which he played in the Bundesliga until 1991 and which he then left for EC Graz . With the Grazers, the left shooter was Austrian runner-up three times, in 1995 he returned to Vienna for one season. For the 1996/97 season , Martin Ulrich signed a contract with Adler Mannheim , with whom he became German champions in 1997 and 1998 . In 1998 Ulrich returned to the Vienna EV for the second time, and in 1999 he moved to the Berlin Capitals in the DEL . Between 2001 and 2005 , the Austrian was on the ice for Düsseldorfer EG , from the 2005/06 season he played for the Red Bulls Salzburg , with whom he achieved the best plus / minus balance in the league in 2007 and 2008 won the championship. In the 2008/09 season he was under contract in the Austrian National League at EK Zell am See .
On September 30, 2009, Martin Ulrich ended his career in professional ice hockey after 22 years. A week later, the ÖEHV announced that Martin Ulrich would be the head coach of the Austrian U18 national team in the junior division.
International
In the junior division, Ulrich took part in the 1987 Junior B World Championship with the Austrian U20 team.
For the Austrian national ice hockey team , for which he most recently also held the captaincy , Martin Ulrich has participated in a total of 17 world championships since 1991 . He played first in 1991 , 1992 and 1997 in the B group and in 1993 , 1994 , 1995 , 1996 , 1998 , 1999 and 2000 in the A group. After switching to the current division system, he was in the top division in 2001 , 2002 , 2004 , 2005 and 2007 and in Division I in 2006 and 2008 , when he was elected to the all-star team of the tournament.
He also played three Olympic Winter Games ( 1994 in Lillehammer , 1998 in Nagano and 2002 in Salt Lake City ) and three qualifying tournaments for the Olympic Winter Games (for the 1998, 2002 and 2006 Games ). After the World Cup tournament of Division I in Innsbruck in 2008, he announced his resignation after 228 games for the national team. This means that Ulrich has the second most international matches in Austria behind Gerhard Unterluggauer (243 games as of February 16, 2014).
