The world championship of the top division was held from May 5th to 21st, 2006 in the Latvian capital Riga . It was the first award at a world championship to a former Soviet republic. Due to delays in the construction of the new ice rink in Riga, the International Ice Hockey Federation had nominated the Swedish ice hockey association Svenska Ishockeyförbundet as a stand-by organizer , but in July 2004 it finally confirmed that the title fights would be held in Latvia.

With their victory in the final, the Swedish national team became the first national team ever to win the gold medal in the Olympic ice hockey tournament and become ice hockey world champion in the same year . It was the eighth title win for the Scandinavians.

Venues

The game was played in two arenas in the capital of the Baltic states - the newly built Arena Riga with a capacity of 11,000 spectators as the main venue and the nearby Skonto Arena , which had a capacity of 6,500 spectators.

Special occurrences

During the second round match between Canada and Latvia, there were some unsightly scenes from the Latvian fans.

The audience felt they were disadvantaged by referee Rick Looker in the first third, as he pronounced many penalty times against the Latvian team, which the Canadians could also use. The audience was so angry that towards the end of the first third they started throwing objects on the ice. Hard money was also thrown on the ice, which is difficult to remove. The strangest thing was a sneaker. Looker preferred the first third break so that the audience could calm down and the ice could be cleaned. So after the break, the rest of the first third was played and the second third could be played without further incidents.

In the third third, objects were thrown onto the ice again after another penalty period. Looker sent the players off the ice again. To calm the situation, the Latvian player Jānis Sprukts spoke to the audience through the stadium speakers. He asked fans not to disrupt the game any further so that it could end normally. Then the players came back on the ice and the game could be ended without further disturbance by the audience. The game ended 11-0 for Canada (Canada used 9 out of 10 power play situations).
