Karol Križan (born June 5, 1980 in Žilina , Czechoslovakia ) is a Slovak ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with HKM Rimavska Sobota from the third class 2nd division since 2017 .

Career

Križan began his career in the junior teams of the MHk 32 Liptovský Mikuláš , for which he made his debut in the 1996/97 season in the Extraliga . From 1998 he was the goalkeeper of the MHk 32, before moving to HKm Zvolen within the league during the 2000/01 season. Zvolen won the Slovak championship title in the same season , but Križan was mainly used in the second team of the HKm. In the summer of 2001 he returned to his hometown club and played 40 games for the MHk 32. A year later he moved again to Zvolen, where he became a regular goalkeeper. With Zvolen he repeatedly reached the playoffs of the Extraliga in the following years and even made it to the finals in 2004, but Zvolen was unable to win a championship. Especially in the playoffs of the 2004/05 season, he impressed with a catch rate of 93.9% and an average goal against 1.88.

Due to the performances shown, the Swedish first division club MODO Hockey signed Karol Križan in the summer of 2005. He was also able to build on his excellent performances in Sweden and led his team to the quarter-finals of the elite series in 2006 . In the same season he was involved in a curiosity: In the game against Timrå IK in March 2006, Karol Križan scored a goal outnumbered and achieved a shutout . A year later he was able to celebrate the championship title of the 2006/07 season with his teammates , in which Križan was involved with a strong goalkeeping performance: He played all 20 playoff games for MODO and scored 2.19 goals against with 92.2% Shots.

During the 2008/09 season, Križan moved to HC Ambrì-Piotta in Switzerland to replace the injured goalkeeper Thomas Bäumle . Between June 2009 and January 2011 he was under contract with MHC Martin from the Slovak Extraliga before he moved to the Växjö Lakers in the Swedish HockeyAllsvenskan . In the summer of 2011 it was announced that he was moving to the Italian first division club Ritten Sport in the A1 series .

International

In addition to his success at club level, Karol Križan was also regularly used in international championships. With the junior selection of Slovakia he took part in the U20 World Championships in 1999 and 2000 . He also played in the Slovak national jersey at the 2004 , 2006 and 2007 World Cups and the 2006 Winter Olympics . He was also a member of the Slovak team at the 2006 and 2008 World Cups , but was not used.
