The MsHK Žilina is an ice hockey club from the city of Žilina in Slovakia, founded in 1925 as ŠK Žilina . He has played in the Slovak 1st division since 2019 .

history

The ice hockey department of the Športový klub Žilina was founded on January 25, 1925. In the following years it took part in regional competitions, including the Tatra Cup in 1931 . In 1949 a junior team won the championship of its age group. In 1950 ice hockey was reorganized in Czechoslovakia and Žilina played in a regional league. 1951 succeeded in promotion to the national league. At the end of the season 1951/52 Iskra Slovena Žilina occupied only the last place in group C. A year later, the club rose again from the second division. They were later relegated to the third division before being promoted back to the second division in 1957. In 1960/61 the event repeated itself with relegation and direct re-ascent.

At the end of the season 1964/65 Jednota Žilina won group D of the second division and thus qualified for the promotion games in the first division . In these, however, Jednota only came in last. In the following two decades ZVL Zilina played in the 1st SNHL , de Slovak part of the second division, and mostly occupied middle to lower placements.

In 1983, the club rose to the third, regional, division, but managed to return to the 1st SNHL a year later. Another year later, ZVL only reached the bottom of the league and was relegated again. With the division of Czechoslovakia into two independent states, a new league system was introduced in Slovakia. The now renamed HK VTJ Žilina club was included in the second division, the first division . In 1999, the HK ŠKP Žilina took part for the first time in promotion games for the Slovak Extra League, but failed in sixth place. Two years later, at the end of the 2000/01 season, Žilina was accepted as the champions of the first division directly into the extra league, in which the MsHK has played since then.

The team won the league championship in 2006 and therefore took part in the IIHF European Champions Cup in 2006/07 . She finished second in the Ragulin Division.
