Anton Tomko (born August 4, 1963 in Prešov , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Slovak ice hockey player and current coach .

Career

Anton Tomko began his career as a hockey player in his hometown at ZPA Prešov , where he played a large part of his career. In the 1981/82 season he played for VSŽ Košice . He then returned to his home club, where he was under contract until the end of the 1983/84 season and with this he made promotion to the second division of the CSSR, the 1st SNHL . In parallel to sports, he studied at the University of Prešov . In 1984 he moved with Vladimir Svitek and Anton Bartánus to HK Triglav Kranj in Slovenia, where he ended his active career in 1986. He coached the Slovenian club for the next four years before returning to his hometown.

In Prešov he was initially employed as a youth coach. When Milan Hovorka became head coach of the professional team, Tomko was promoted to assistant coach. He later looked after the club's U18 team before becoming head coach of the A team himself.

In the 2004/05 season he was assistant coach under head coach Milan Hovorka at MsHK Žilina . In the following season was Ján Štěrbák head coach in Žilina and Tomko remained in his position. At the end of the 2005/06 season the MsHK Zilina won the Slovak championship . After winning the title, Šterbák and Anton Tomko received a contract with their league rivals HC Košice , where Tomko was promoted to head coach for the 2008/09 season. In his first year in this position in Košice, Tomko was named Slovak champion with his team and was also named Extraliga coach of the year.

On September 24, 2009 he resigned as coach of HC Košice after a bad start to the season for his team. Shortly thereafter, he signed a contract with his league rivals and his ex-club MsHK Žilina, with which he stayed for a year and a half. For the 2011/12 season he took over the position of head coach of the Slovak U20 national team , which took part in the Extraliga as HK Orange. In the following season he looked after the HC 46 Bardejov from the second Slovak division, before he took over the head coach at HC Košice in 2013 .

International

Tomko represented the national team of Czechoslovakia in the junior division. At the U18 European Championship in Minsk in 1981 , he won the silver medal with the U18 selection.
