During the 2000/01 season the links Sagittarius spent most time with the Portland Pirates , the AHL - farm team of the capital, but also completed his first 10 NHL inserts for Washington. The Canadian also moved between Portland and Washington in the following years, but from the 2003/04 season Pettinger was part of the Capitals' permanent NHL squad. In the 2004/05 lockout season , Matt Pettinger was on the ice in eight games for HDD Olimpija Ljubljana in Slovenia. At the trade deadline of 2008 , the Canadian moved to the Vancouver Canucks , where he was unable to assert himself at the beginning of the following season. After he was put on the waiver list, the Tampa Bay Lightning secured his services. After two games with the Manitoba Moose farm team , the attacker was appointed to the Lightning NHL squad. In the 2009/10 Pettinger was under contract with the Vancouver Canucks, but played most of the season with their farm team in Manitoba .

In the summer of 2010, he then signed a one-year contract with the Kölner Haien , which was extended for another year after the end of the season. After he could not agree on a new contract with the Haien in spring 2012, Pettinger switched to the Hamburg Freezers within the German Ice Hockey League . After Pettinger first helped out as a defender in the 2013/14 season due to the injury-related staff shortage on the Freezers' defense, he was also used in the following season either in defense or in attack as required. In March 2015 it became known that the contract with left-handed shooters in Hamburg would not be extended, whereupon Pettinger ended his active career.
