The Manitoba Moose are a Canadian ice hockey franchise from Winnipeg , Manitoba , part of the American Hockey League and serving as the Winnipeg Jets' farm team . The Moose's home stadium is Bell MTS Place .

history

In 1996 the team moved from St. Paul , Minnesota to Winnipeg to use the vacant Winnipeg Arena . Initially, the Manitoba Moose were a member of the IHL , where they had a modest season and playoff success under their head coach Randy Carlyle , a former Winnipeg Jets player.

When the IHL broke up, the "Elks" joined the American Hockey League (AHL) and became the Vancouver Canucks' farm team . In addition, her new coach became former Canucks player Stan Smyl . He was later replaced by Randy Carlyle . In November 2004 the team got a new face: On the one hand the current logo was designed, on the other hand the 15,015 seat Bell MTS Place (until 2017: MTS Center ) was completed.

During the NHL lockout in the 2004/2005 season, some NHL players played in the AHL and the teams were the focus of ice hockey in North America. For this reason and because the Manitoba Moose both played a good regular season and impressed in the play-offs, the team achieved very high attendance figures. During the season there were an average of 8,626 fans per game, and 9,568 in the play-offs. Winnipeg had a popular ice hockey team again after the Winnipeg Jets were relocated to Phoenix . The MTS Center was also the venue for the AHL All-Star Classic and posted an All-Star Game attendance record of 15,015.

In 2011 the franchise was relocated to St. John's in the provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador , where it was renamed St. John's IceCaps . After just four years, however, they returned to their old name and place of work and shared Bell MTS Place with the Winnipeg Jets.
