Nathan Smith (born February 9, 1982 in Edmonton , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who was last under contract with the Syracuse Crunch in the American Hockey League .
Career
Nathan Smith began his career as a hockey player with the Swift Current Broncos , for which he was active from 1998 to 2002 in the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League . During this period he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2000 in the first round as a total of 23 players by the Vancouver Canucks . From 2002 to 2007 he was a regular on their farm team Manitoba Moose in the American Hockey League . He was also occasionally for Vancouver in the National Hockey League used, in which he played a total of eight games for the British Columbia team during this period. On July 12, 2007, the center signed a contract as a free agent with the Pittsburgh Penguins . Their AHL farm team Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins , he led as team captain in the 2007/08 season in the playoff final for the Calder Cup , but had to admit defeat in this with his team the Chicago Wolves . He was also on the ice 13 times for Pittsburgh in the NHL in the regular season.
For the 2008/09 season Smith signed a contract as a free agent with the Colorado Avalanche , but was then only used for their AHL farm team Lake Erie Monsters . In the following season he scored 37 scorer points in 67 games for the Houston Eros , including 14 goals. In addition, he completed another nine games in the NHL. For the 2010/11 season , the Canadian was signed by the Augsburg Panthers from the German Ice Hockey League . In the Panthers, he immediately became team captain and finished last with his team at the end of the season. In August 2011, the offensive player was signed by the Syracuse Crunch , after 18 games he ended his career due to injury.
