The Cleveland Monsters are an ice hockey team from the North American American Hockey League (AHL) and are based in Cleveland , Ohio . The franchise , which previously operated under the name Lake Erie Monsters , has been located there since the summer of 2007 and played under the name Utah Grizzlies in Salt Lake City , Utah until 2005 .

The team acts since the season 2015/16 as a farm team of the Columbus Blue Jackets in the National Hockey League .

history

The franchise was founded in 1994 as the Denver Grizzlies and played in the International Hockey League (IHL). After only a year, the team relocated to Salt Lake City and played under the name Utah Grizzlies . After the IHL was dissolved in the summer of 2001, the franchise switched to the AHL . In 2005, the team stopped playing.

In 2006 Dan Gilbert , the owner of the NBA team Cleveland Cavaliers , bought the team and relocated it to Cleveland , Ohio . The team was named after the sea monster Bessie that, according to a story , is said to live in Lake Erie . In December 2006, the Monsters agreed with the Colorado Avalanche from the National Hockey League on a collaboration; the team has since acted as the so-called farm team of the NHL club. On May 7, 2007, Joe Sacco was introduced as the Monsters' first head coach. The Lake Erie Monsters played their first league game on October 6, 2007 against the Grand Rapids Griffins .

After two seasons Sacco was appointed head coach of the Avalanche, the post of coach of the Monsters took over David Quinn . In November 2010, the Monsters and the Colorado Avalanche agreed on a multi-year extension of their commitment. Under Quinn, the Lake Erie Monsters qualified for the first time in their history for the play-offs in the 2010/11 AHL season . There they lost to the Manitoba Moose in the first round .

In the summer of 2012, David Quinn was named Colorado's assistant coach under Joe Sacco, after which Dean Chynoweth was introduced as the Monsters' new head coach.

After eight seasons as a farm team of the Avalanche, in which the team reached the play-offs once, the Lake Erie Monsters changed their NHL cooperation partner. Since the 2015/16 season , Lake Erie has been the farm team for the Columbus Blue Jackets , which are also based in Ohio. At the end of the 2015/16 season, the Monsters won their first Calder Cup in franchise history. A little later, in August 2016, the team announced that it would operate under the name Cleveland Monsters from now on .
