Ben James Walter (born May 11, 1984 in Beaconsfield , Quebec ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who was last under contract with the EC VSV in the EBEL . He is the son of former ice hockey player Ryan Walter .

Career

Walter played in his youth between 2000 and 2002 for two years with the Langley Hornets in the British Columbia Hockey League . He then went to the University of Massachusetts Lowell , where he played for the River Hawks in Hockey East , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In his third season for the university he reached 39 points scorer in 34 games and he was elected to the Division's Second All-Star Team.

After three years in which he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2004 in the fifth round in 160th place by the Boston Bruins , he signed on August 31, 2005 an NHL entry contract for three years with the Bruins. He began his first professional season with the Providence Bruins , the Boston farm team , in the American Hockey League . On January 12, 2006 Walter made his NHL debut with the Boston Bruins in the game against the Los Angeles Kings . In total, he came to six NHL appearances, while he reached 40 points in 62 games with Providence. The situation continued in the following season, before he was given on September 11, 2007 in exchange for Petteri Nokelainen to the New York Islanders .

For the 2007/08 season , the attacker was first ordered to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in the AHL, before he played his first game against the Pittsburgh Penguins for the Islanders on November 3, 2007 . That season, he only made eight appearances for the Islanders while playing an important role with the Sound Tigers, scoring 20 goals and 46 assists in 68 games. After the season, Walter's contract was for another year. On June 30, 2009, the transfer rights of the striker was given in exchange for Tony Romano to the New Jersey Devils . With the Devils he received a one-year contract and was used with the Lowell Devils in the AHL. Walter also commuted between the NHL and AHL squads in the service of New Jersey. On July 7, 2010, the Canadian signed a one-year contract with the Colorado Avalanche . There Walter was assigned to their farm team Lake Erie Monsters in the AHL. In the summer of 2011, Walter changed clubs again after just one year and joined the organization of the Calgary Flames for two years , where he was again assigned to the Abbotsford Heat farm team .

After the end of the 2012/13 season , Walter moved to Europe and signed a one-year contract with Örebro HK from Svenska Hockeyligan . The involvement with the Swedish club only lasted until the end of the year, when he moved to the Finnish Liiga at Jokerit Helsinki on December 29, 2013 and ended the season there. For the 2014/15 season , Walter moved to the Austrian club EC Red Bull Salzburg in the EBEL . The center forward won the Austrian championship title with the Red Bulls at the end of the season . He defended the title after a contract extension in the following year with the team.

In the summer of 2016, Greg Poss, a new trainer, came to Salzburg, whereupon Walter moved to Japan to work for Nippon Paper Cranes . After the one-year engagement in East Asia in the Asia League Ice Hockey , the Canadian returned to Austria in July 2017. There he signed a contract with the EC VSV .
