In order to avoid the uncertainties that arise every year, the entry period for the season has been set earlier than usual. In January it was announced that all twelve teams involved in the preseason would remain in the league. However, that turned out to be a hasty announcement over the course of the summer; in June problems became apparent again, particularly affecting HC Bozen and HDD Olimpija Ljubljana. Both clubs struggled with major financial problems. The Italians repeatedly asked for the deadline for the final commitment to be postponed. HDD Jesenice's entry was also off the table after the previous club had left the league in the summer of 2012 for financial reasons.

As in previous years, there were also reports of a possible expansion of the league. The HC Slovan Bratislava was since the 2012/13 season in the Continental Hockey League was active (KHL) had, but it got financial problems and therefore looked for alternatives. At the beginning of 2015 there was therefore a change to the EBEL for a while, with the club even carrying out a survey among its supporters. In mid-April it was finally announced that the club was only considering remaining in the KHL or moving to the domestic extra league as serious options.

mode

The mode remained unchanged compared to the previous season. In the regular round, a double round trip was played (44 games), which was followed by an intermediate round with a simple round trip. The six better-placed teams played for the right to vote for the quarter-finals, the worse-placed teams for the last two playoff places. Playoffs followed with quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals. The series were played in best-of-seven mode.

The introduction of the three-point rule for victories after regular playing time was new, with which the EBEL followed the international trend with some delay.

Season preparation

As in the previous seasons, the teams took part in various preparatory tournaments. The most important tournament was again the Champions Hockey League , in which Masters Salzburg, the Vienna Capitals, the EHC Linz and the EC KAC participated in the 2015/16 season .

Basic round

Main round

Defending champion Salzburg started the season with poor performance and was even in last place in the table. With a series of victories, however, he quickly caught up with the top field and finally took over first place. In the first half of the regular season it was also very close to the top of the table between Znojmo, EHC Linz and the Dornbirn ice hockey club. In particular, the performance of the Vorarlberger Club was surprising in view of the assessments made before the season.

The EC KAC was also able to keep up with the teams ahead for a long time. However, the club made an exchange of the coach, fired Doug Mason and hired Alexander Mellitzer first as an interim and later as a full-time coach. After this unexpected change, the team slipped into the lower half of the table. The opposite was the season for EC VSV, where Greg Holst (the club's master coach from the 2005/06 season ) replaced Hannu Järvenpää and the team quickly approached the top of the table.

Sapa Fehérvár AV19, Bolzano Foxes and Vienna Capitals stayed in midfield for most of the regular season. Only towards the end did the club from Hungary lose touch and finally stayed in the bottom third of the table. At the beginning of January 2016, coach Rob Pallin was replaced by Hannu Järvenpää, who had only been dismissed from the EC VSV a few weeks earlier. In the lower third of the table, the Graz 99ers and HC Innsbruck stayed close to each other in the battle for tenth place; both clubs fell far short of expectations, with the respective coaches being replaced.

The HDD Olimpija Ljubljana fell behind in last place. The Slovenian club got off to a good start in the season despite a weak squad, but later recorded mainly defeats (including two series with ten and eleven lost games without a point) and, as in previous seasons, had major financial problems fight.

Towards the end of the main round, a few transfers were also made. The EC KAC signed the Hungarian national team striker István Sofron , who switched from the Krefeld Penguins to the EBEL, defender Brendan Bell reinforced the Bozener Füchse, while André Lakos switched to Orli Znojmo. Furthermore, the Graz 99ers signed Kyle Beach , who had become champions with Salzburg in the previous season.

Quarter finals

The shortest series was that between the Vienna Capitals and the EC VSV, although three of the five games could only be decided in overtime. The EC VSV acted defensively and relied on an outstanding goalkeeper in Jean-Philippe Lamoureux , while the Capitals were weakened by a series of failures. Shortly after the crucial game five, it was also announced that Jim Boni would end his job as head coach of the Wiener.

The series between EC Red Bull Salzburg and EC KAC began with two wins for Salzburg, but the EC KAC has since been able to turn it with three wins in a row. The equalizer in Klagenfurt was followed by a playoff, which resulted in a controversial scene: when the score was 3-2 for the home team, a penalty shot was awarded to the EC KAC in the middle of the second third. In the defensive action of the Salzburg goalkeeper Juuso Riksman , he dropped the bat, but this did not lead to any consequences. As a result, Salzburg won the game and the series with two empty net goals.

EC Dornbirn started their series against Orli Znojmo well with two wins, but then lost four times in a row, with which the Czechs won an EBEL quarter-finals for the first time and advanced to the semi-finals. The Czechs switched goalkeeper Patrik Nechvátal to new signing Jan Lukas in the middle of the second game and presented themselves defensively safer in the following games; only game four of the series went into overtime, where it was decided after just forty seconds by the top scorer of the Czechs, Colton Yellow Horn .

The only series in which the better placed team had not made a choice of the opponent began with two victories of the EHC Linz, through which the home right could be achieved. The Bolzano team equalized the series in the meantime, but in the end had to admit defeat in the overtime of the decisive game.

final

The final series followed the pattern of the previous series of the club, with the Salzburg team lagging behind. The opening win of the Austrians was followed by two defeats, including a 3-7 on their own ice, in which the Czechs presented themselves confidently. However, Salzburg were able to turn the series around again and win the championship in the sixth game in Znojmo. This was the sixth title for the club since joining the EBEL and at the same time the third title defense.

Others

Since the ÖEHV entered into a cooperation with the statistics service provider Hockeydata in the summer of 2015 , the reporting and statistics system of the EBEL was also changed. From then on, player registrations and de-registrations were made electronically. The measure also expanded the range of statistics so that data on the ice age, fouls, hits and the like should have been available for the new season. In practice, however, this turned out to be impossible to implement as planned, so that, for example, the time-on-ice statistics were only available from the final series.
