Career as a coach
Before joining the DEL as a trainer , he worked for a long time in the Netherlands and Canada. In Eindhoven followed Utrecht , the Sudbury Wolves , HC Asiago and the Tilburg Trappers . Then he celebrated his debut in the DEL. He was assistant trainer for the Augsburger Panthers for a while, from 1998 he trained the Krefeld Penguins for a total of three years . The following season he coached EV Zug . In the 2002/03 season Mason was without employment, in 2003 he replaced Dave Whistle with the Iserlohn Roosters , with whom he still confidently avoided relegation. As a result, he was voted Trainer of the Year 2003 in Iserlohn. The native Canadian got a contract early on until 2006 because he is considered a hard worker. In order to be able to concentrate fully on this task, he stepped down as bond coach in the Netherlands . With their national team, he narrowly missed promotion to the A group at the 2005 B World Cup in Eindhoven. On the last day of the season he announced his departure from Iserlohn. According to his own statements, he either wants to go to Sweden or take a break. Since April 2006 Doug Mason was the head coach of the Kölner Haie . Clayton Beddoes , who was already Mason's assistant in Iserlohn , stayed in Cologne as the assistant coach of the new Haie head coach . In the 2007/2008 season he was runner-up with the Kölner Haien. After only seven games in the 2008/09 season , Mason was dismissed from the KEC, as the start of the season was bad with seven defeats from as many games.
In the 2009/10 season Mason trained as the head coach of the Adler Mannheim before he was released on January 11, 2010 due to eight defeats in nine games. On December 13, 2010, Doug Mason took over the position of head coach at his ex-club Iserlohn Roosters and replaced Uli Liebsch there . At the end of the season he and his team just failed at the pre-playoffs. In February 2013, the Iserlohn Roosters took up the option to extend their contract with Doug Mason until the end of the 2013/14 season . On October 29, 2013, he was given a leave of absence due to poor athletic development.
Between October 2014 and December 2015 Mason trained the Austrian record champion EC KAC in the EBEL .
On 15 December 2016, transferred Graz 99ers Mason the post of head coach in succession to the sacked Ivo Jan .
