Career as a coach

Steve Stirling's first coaching station was the university team at Babson College , which he coached from 1978 to 1983 and from 1985 to 1993. From 1983 to 1985 he was the coach of the Providence College team with which he was champion of Hockey East in his sophomore year and was defeated in the final of the NCAA championship against Rensselaer.

After a five-year hiatus, he became assistant coach of the Lowell Lock Monsters in the 1998/99 season , with whom he stayed for three years. In the 2001/02 season he trained the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and was the first time head coach of a professional team. In his first year he reached the final of the Calder Cup and stayed in the AHL for another year before the New York Islanders from the NHL appointed him their new coach. His team reached the play-offs, but was beaten by the eventual Stanley Cup winner Tampa Bay Lightning in five games in the Conference quarter-finals. After the 2004/05 season was canceled due to the lockout , Stirling was back in Long Island for the 2005/06 season behind the gang. Here he was released in January 2006, so that his time in the best ice hockey league in the world was over. The next year he was coach of the Springfield Falcons in the AHL and then moved to the Norfolk Admirals . Here he experienced a disappointing season, which ended with the worst result in the history of the Admirals. After the club only offered him a job as a scout , he decided to move to Europe .

He signed a two-year contract with the Iserlohn Roosters from the DEL and thus succeeded Rick Adduono , with whom he played in a team between 1975 and 1977. In the Sauerland he was given leave of absence after 44 games, so that he was no longer active as the head coach of the Roosters. After the Canadian worked as the head coach of SHC Fassa from the A1 series in the 2009/10 season , he took over the role of assistant coach for the Binghamton Senators from the American Hockey League for the following season .

Others

When the film Slap Shot was shot in Johnstown , Pennsylvania in 1976 , the producers were looking for some real ice hockey players to portray the fictional team of the "Charlestown Chiefs". The choice fell on some players from the Broome Dusters from Binghamton , including Stirling, so that he can be seen in the film for a few seconds when Paul Newman delivers a fight with the opposing goalkeeper.
