Career

Daum graduated from the University of Alberta with a degree in physical education in 1983 and played on the university's ice hockey team. From the 1981/82 season onwards, he was already working as a youth coach during his studies. In 1985 he took over the post of head coach at the Saint Albert Saints ( Alberta Junior Hockey League ) and served from 1986 for three years as head coach of the Nipawin Hawks in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League .

From 1989 to 1995 Daum worked in various functions (head coach, assistant coach and manager) for three different clubs in the WHL, namely for the Prince Albert Raiders , the Swift Current Broncos and the Lethbridge Hurricans .

Between 1995 and 2005 he served as the head coach of the University of Alberta ice hockey team . He led the "Bears" three times to the championship title in the Canadian university league CIS and six times to the championship title in the Canada West Conference. He was recognized twice as CIS and five times as Canada West Trainer of the year. At the Universiade 2003 in Tarvisio , he led the Canadian selection to the bronze medal.

From 2005 to 2007 he was the head coach of the Houston Eros , the farm team of the NHL club Minnesota Wild in the American Hockey League (AHL). In the 2007/08 season he was an assistant member of the Edmonton Oilers ' coaching staff in the National Hockey League (NHL), then worked as a talent scout for the Oilers, and in February 2009 he became head coach of the Oilers' AHL farm team, the Springfield Falcons , which he directed until the end of the 2009/10 season.

For the 2011/12 season he was hired by the Austrian first division club EHC Linz as head coach and promptly led the club to the 2012 championship title. In the 2013/14, 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons Linz reached the playoff semi-finals under Daum's leadership and in 2016 / 17 the quarter-finals of the EBEL . During his time in Linz he was nicknamed "Ice Hockey Professor". At the end of the 2016/17 season, the contract between Daum and EHC Linz was terminated after 237 wins. Daum was an assistant member of the coaching staff of the Austrian national team at the 2012, 2013 and 2014 World Championships and at the 2014 Winter Olympics. On October 12, 2017, he took over the position of head coach at the Iserlohn Roosters ( German Ice Hockey League ), replacing the dismissed Jari Pasanen .

Due to the "unsatisfactory sporting development of the team", Daum was released on November 21, 2018 as head coach at the Iserlohn Roosters. At the beginning of February 2020, Daum was hired by the EC VSV as head coach and held this position until the season was broken off.
