The Lethbridge Hurricanes are a Canadian ice hockey team based in Lethbridge , Alberta . The team has played in one of Canada's three top junior ice hockey leagues, the Western Hockey League (WHL) , since 1987 .
history
In the summer of 1987, the Calgary Wranglers from Calgary , Alberta , were relocated to Lethbridge and renamed Lethbridge Hurricanes. In their third year, the team reached the final of the Ed Chynoweth Cup for the first time , in which they were defeated by the Kamloops Blazers . In the following season they reached the WHL final again, in which they had to admit defeat to the Spokane Chiefs . The Hurricanes achieved their greatest success in the 1996/97 season when they won the Ed Chynoweth Cup. As a WHL champion Lethbridge qualified for the Memorial Cup , in which they were subject to the Olympiques de Hull from the QMJHL . In the 2007/08 season, the Hurricanes reached the WHL final again, but were subject to the Spokane Chiefs for the second time since 1990.
Before the Lethbridge Hurricanes, the Lethbridge Broncos from the WHL played in Lethbridge (1974-1986).
