Kristopher Royce "Kris" Versteeg (born May 13, 1986 in Lethbridge , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 736 games for the Chicago Blackhawks , Toronto Maple Leafs , Philadelphia Flyers , Florida between 2002 and 2020 Panthers , Carolina Hurricanes , Los Angeles Kings and Calgary Flames in the National Hockey League (NHL) on the position of right winger . In the service of the Chicago Blackhawks, for whom he completed the majority of the games, Versteeg won the Stanley Cup twice in 2010 and 2015 . His younger brother Mitch is also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

Kris Versteeg began his career as a hockey player in his hometown with the Lethbridge Hurricanes , for whom he played for a total of three years in the Western Hockey League from 2002 to 2005 . During this time he was selected during the NHL Entry Draft 2004 in the fifth round as a total of 134 players by the Boston Bruins . After his senior year in Lethbridge, he moved to the Red Deer Rebels and played for another year in the WHL before he played for the first time in professional ice hockey for the Providence Bruins , the farm team of the Boston Bruins, towards the end of the 2005/06 season . In 13 regular season games, the attacker scored six points, including two goals. In the three playoff games he remained without scorer points .

On February 3, 2007, Kris Versteg was given to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Brandon Bochenski . Until the end of the 2006/07 season Versteeg played for the then AHL farm team of the Blackhawks, the Norfolk Admirals . In the following season, Versteeg was in 56 AHL games for the Rockford IceHogs , Chicago's new farm team, on the ice and scored 49 points, including 18 goals. In the same season he made his debut in the National Hockey League and scored 20 scorer points, including seven goals, in 19 games for the Blackhawks. In the 2009/10 season he won the Stanley Cup with Chicago for the first time in his career .

As a result, the Blackhawks separated from Versteeg at the end of June, so that he moved to Toronto with Bill Sweatt in exchange for Viktor Stålberg , Christopher DiDomenico and Philippe Paradis . At the Maple Leafs he was set as a regular player before he was given to the Philadelphia Flyers in February 2011 in exchange for a first and third round vote for the 2011 NHL Entry Draft . On July 1, 2011, the Flyers transferred him for a second-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2012 or NHL Entry Draft 2013 and a third-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2012 to the Florida Panthers .

After two years in Florida, he and Philippe Lefebvre were transferred to the Chicago Blackhawks , who in turn gave up Jimmy Hayes and Dylan Olsen . In the 2014-15 season, Versteeg won his second Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks.

In September 2015, Versteeg was handed over to the Carolina Hurricanes together with Joakim Nordström , which in turn transferred the young players Dennis Robertson and Jake Massie to Chicago. The Blackhawks also swapped their third-round voting rights for the Hurricanes' five-round voting rights for the 2017 NHL Entry Draft . Chicago made space in the Salary Cap through this swap , which shortly afterwards extended the contract with Marcus Krüger .

Versteeg changed teams again in February 2016 when he was handed over to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for Valentin Sykow and a success-based five-round vote in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft . The attacker ended the season in Los Angeles before he decided to move to Europe in July 2016 and signed a one-year contract with SC Bern from the National League A. At the beginning of September, however, it became known that Versteeg had not passed the medical check in Bern and that he could therefore not start his contract. He subsequently signed a one-year contract with the Calgary Flames in October 2016 . This was extended once by the same term before he was not given a further contract in Calgary in the summer of 2018.

In August 2018 he moved to HK Awangard Omsk in the Continental Hockey League (KHL), before the Canadian signed a contract with the Växjö Lakers in the Svenska Hockeyligan in February 2019 until the end of the 2018/19 season. In April 2019, Versteeg returned to North America to sign another one-year contract with the Rockford IceHogs, the Blackhawks' farm team. He left this but after only six missions and joined the Slovak club HK Nitra in November of the same year . In spring 2020, the two-time Stanley Cup winner declared his active career over a few weeks before his 34th birthday.

International

With the Canadian U18 selection, Versteeg took part in the U18 Junior World Championship in the Belarusian capital Minsk . He finished fourth with the team. In seven tournaments he prepared two goals.

The striker took part with Team Canada in the prestigious Spengler Cup 2019 in Davos , which he won with the national team.
