Marcus Krüger (born May 27, 1990 in Stockholm ) is a Swedish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the ZSC Lions in the Swiss National League since July 2019 and plays for them in the position of the center . He was previously active in the National Hockey League from 2011 to 2019 with the Chicago Blackhawks and the Carolina Hurricanes , winning the Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks in the 2013 and 2015 playoffs .
Career
Krüger played in the junior age until 2003 at Huddinge IK . At the age of 13 he moved to the junior division of Hammarby IF , with whose U16 juniors he won the national championship in the 2004/05 season. After three years at Hammarby, he left the club and joined Djurgårdens IF . There he went through the U18 and U20 juniors before he made his debut in the Elitserien in the 2008/09 season . Before the start of the 2009/10 season , Kruger was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the fifth round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft in 149th place . The Swede spent his first full season with the seniors at Djurgården, with whom he won the runner-up. It wasn't until June 2010 that the Blackhawks signed him, but immediately loaned him to Djurgården. After finishing the 2010/11 season in the Elitserien, Chicago ordered the striker to North America. There he came in the remainder of the regular season and playoffs for first assignments in the National Hockey League . In the following season he was able to establish himself permanently in the NHL roster and completed 71 games in his rookie season .
In the 2012/13 season Kruger won the Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks ; a success that the Swede was able to repeat in 2015. As a result, Kruger was part of the Chicago squad until the end of the 2016/17 season . Due to his high salary, he was repeatedly involved in transfer speculations during the summer break, which were confirmed in early July 2017 when he was transferred to the newly founded franchise of the Vegas Golden Knights on July 2nd . Since the Blackhawks were almost forced to give up the Swedes due to the salary cap , they received neither players nor draft voting rights in direct exchange from the Golden Knights. Just two days later, the Golden Knights traded the Swede for a five-round suffrage for the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft .
At the Hurricanes, Krüger was subsequently also used in part for the farm team in the American Hockey League (AHL), the Charlotte Checkers , before he was handed over to the Arizona Coyotes in May 2018, including a third-round vote in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft . The Coyotes in return sent Jordan Martinook and a four-round vote for the same draft to Carolina. Almost two months later, Kruger finally returned to Chicago when he was handed over to the Blackhawks in July 2018 along with Jordan Maletta , Andrew Campbell , MacKenzie Entwistle and a five-round vote in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft . In return, the Coyotes Vinnie Hinostroza , Jordan Oesterle and a third-round vote in the same draft and also took over the contract of Marián Hossa .
After more than eight years in the NHL, Krüger returned to Europe in the summer of 2019 and joined the ZSC Lions from the Swiss National League under a two-year contract .
International
At the international level, Krüger represented his home country at the 2010 U20 World Junior Championship . To win the bronze medal, he contributed six assists in six games. A year later he was part of the Swedish squad at the 2011 World Cup in Slovakia . At the 2014 Winter Olympics , he won the silver medal with the Swedish national team. Furthermore, he represented his home country at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 , where he achieved third place with the team before winning the gold medal with the Tre Kronor at the 2017 World Cup .
