The Rockford IceHogs are an ice hockey team from the North American American Hockey League (AHL) and are based in Rockford , Illinois . The franchise has been located there since the summer of 2007 and played under the name Cincinnati Mighty Ducks in Cincinnati , Ohio until 2005 .
The team acts as the farm team of the Chicago Blackhawks from the National Hockey League .
history
The franchise was founded in 1995 as Baltimore Bandits , but moved to Cincinnati after two unsuccessful years and was renamed the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks . The Mighty Ducks acted mainly as the farm team of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and the Detroit Red Wings , but in the summer of 2005 the cooperation agreements with both teams expired and no new agreement could be made with a team from the NHL , so the franchise ceased business.
In March 2007, Rockford MetroCentre bought the dormant franchise and relocated it to Rockford , Illinois . In addition, a cooperation agreement was reached with the Chicago Blackhawks . The team takes the place of the Rockford IceHogs from the United Hockey League , whose naming rights and team logo the Rockford MetroCentre has bought, which is why the AHL team also appears as the Rockford IceHogs.
Trainer
As the first coach in franchise history, Mike Haviland took over the coaching post in 2007 and led the Rockford IceHogs through the premiere season. The team qualified for the play-offs and, after a first-round win against the Houston Eros, reached the second playoff round, in which the IceHogs were defeated in seven games by the eventual Calder Cup winner Chicago Wolves . The following season Haviland took over the position as assistant coach of the Chicago Blackhawks , as successor Bill Peters was commissioned to lead the team. Peters had previously won the Ed Chynoweth Cup , the championship of the WHL, with the Spokane Chiefs from the Western Hockey League in the 2007/08 season . In the following two seasons they made it into the play-offs, in which the team was eliminated from the competition in the first round. After Peters left the organization of the Blackhawks, his former assistant Ted Dent was promoted to head coach in July 2011.
