The Moncton Hawks were a Canadian ice hockey franchise of the American Hockey League based in Moncton , New Brunswick . The Hawks' venue was the Moncton Coliseum .

history

The Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League acquired in 1987 by the Boston Bruins the rights to their former farm team in the American Hockey League , the Boston Braves , who have been inactive since 1974, and moved the franchise to Moncton , New Brunswick , to where it under the name Moncton Hawks in the AHL was active. After the Hawks never got past the second playoff round in their first six seasons, they reached the Calder Cup final for the first and only time in franchise history in the 1993/94 season , in which they beat the Portland Pirates 2: 4 - Wins defeated. After this season the franchise was dissolved.

Before the Moncton Hawks, the AHL clubs New Brunswick Hawks (1978-1982), Moncton Alpines (1982-1984) and Moncton Golden Flames (1984-1987) played in Moncton. The void left by the dissolution of the franchise in the city was filled by the Moncton Alpines (1995-1996) and the Moncton Wildcats (since 1996) from the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec .
