Selenicereus extensus is a species of plant in the genus Selenicereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Selenicereus extensus grows epiphytically or lithophytically , shrubby, with spreading to climbing and several meters long shoots . The green, triangular (rarely square) shoots are irregularly segmented, often root in the substrate and reach a diameter of 0.8 to 3 centimeters. Their edges are usually flared, but sometimes straight. The mostly slightly raised areoles are 2 to 3 centimeters apart and are covered with whitish to grayish brown felt. From them arise 2 to 8 brown to honey-yellow, sub-conical thorns up to 5 millimeters in length.

The flowers, which are open during the day, are narrow, funnel-shaped and between 30 and 38 centimeters long. Your flower tube is 16 to 24 centimeters long with a diameter of 1.7 to 2 centimeters. The outer bracts are greenish yellow, the inner, somewhat wrinkled bracts are white to cream-colored. The pericarpel has numerous areoles that are covered with fine thorns and bristles. The flower tube is covered with scales and thorns or with bristly areoles. The ellipsoid, tuberous fruits are up to 6 centimeters long and reach a diameter of up to 3.5 centimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Selenicereus extensus is distributed at low altitudes in French Guiana , Suriname , Guyana and possibly also in Brazil , Ecuador , Colombia and Peru . The first valid description as Cereus extensus was published in 1828 by Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle . Beat Ernst Leuenberger placed them in the genus Selenicereus in 2001 . Hylocereus extensus is a synonym .
