The Hylocereeae are a tribe in the subfamily Cactoideae from the cactus family .
description
Hylocereeae are climbing or epiphytic shrubs with adventitious roots . The flattened or less ribbed shoots have no glochids . The flower-forming sections are not differentiated. The flowers appearing to the side are medium to large in size and often open at night, but sometimes also during the day. The areoles on the flower cup are bare, thorny, bristly or hairy. The fleshy, non-tearing or tearing fruits contain medium-sized to large seeds that are surrounded by a slimy shell. The hilum and micropyle of the seeds are united with one another.
Systematics and distribution
The tribe Hylocereeae is common in the tropical rainforests of Central America and northern South America .
The following genera belong to the tribe :
- Disocactus Lindl.
- Epiphyllum Haw.
- Hylocereus ( A. Berger ) Britton & Rose
- Pseudorhipsalis Britton & Rose
- Selenicereus (A. Berger) Britton & Rose
- Weberocereus Britton & Rose
Botanical history
Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose described in their work The Cactaceae the three subtribes Rhipsalidanae (with 8 genera), Epipyhlanae (with 9 genera) and Hylocereanae (with 9 genera) which all contained epiphytic and aerial root-forming species. Curt Backeberg summarized this in 1942 as the tribe Hylocereeae under the subfamily Cereoideae K.Schum. together and divided them into 3 subtribes with 31 of its genera.
The current classification as a tribe of the Cactaceae was made in 1958 by Franz Buxbaum .
