Disocactus flagelliformis is a species of the genus Disocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet flagelliformis means 'whip-, flagellar, tendril-shaped'. Spanish common names are “Flor de Látigo”, “Floricuerno”, “Junco”, “Junquillo” and “Nopalillo”.

Disocactus flagelliformis grows crawling and / or hanging. The shoots are slender, round in cross-section and gray-green in color. They grow up to 1 meter long and are only 1.2 to 2 centimeters in diameter. They have 8 to 13 low ribs . The closely spaced areoles have 15 to 20 fine, reddish-yellow thorns . The red to purple-pink flowers reach a size of 5 to 8 centimeters in length and 2.5 to 4 centimeters in diameter. They appear laterally and are somewhat curved and zygomorphic upwards . The fruits are red, spherical to bristly and 1 centimeter in diameter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Disocactus flagelliformis is common in the Mexican states of Guanajuato , Hidalgo , Mexico , Oaxaca , Puebla , Querétaro , San Luis Potosí and Veracruz and occurs at altitudes above 2000 m.

It was first described as Cactus flagelliformis in 1753 by Carl von Linné . Wilhelm Barthlott introduced the species to Disocactus in 1991 .

PVHeath (1992), Cereus flagelliformis Zucc. (1836), and Aporocactus flagelliformis (Zucc.) Lem. (1860).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Near Threatened (NT)", d. H. listed as low risk.
