Portrait of Adrian Hardy Haworth

Adrian Hardy Haworth (born April 19, 1768 in Hull , † August 24, 1833 in Chelsea ) was a British entomologist and botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Haw. "

Live and act

Haworth dealt intensively with the taxonomic classification of cacti and thick-leaf plants . In professional circles he is generally known as the “father of succulent science” and wrote his highly acclaimed work Synopsis Plantarum Succulentarum in 1812 and his Supplementum Plantarum Succulentarum in 1819 . In the same year he classified as the first botanist, among other things in North America widespread complex of the type Opuntia polyacantha var. Polyacantha Haw. which extends from Alberta in Canada to New Mexico in the USA (also called Plains Prickly Pear). His system for determining the genus Opuntia is still largely valid today.

He published his work on the butterflies living in England in 1828 in the work Lepidoptera Britannica. He put together a collection of over 40,000 insects and set up a large herbarium . He died of cholera .

The results of Haworth's work and publications are archived at the International Association for Plant Taxonomy (IAPT) , among others .

Honors

The plant genus Haworthia was named in his honor . The British entomologist John Curtis named the moth Celaena haworthii after him in 1829 .
