history
The Capital District Islanders were sold in 1993 to entrepreneur Albert Lawrence, who relocated them to Albany , New York , and ended cooperation with the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League to partner with the New Jersey Devils , which in turn formed the Cooperation with their previous farm team, which Utica Devils broke off. Associated with the relocation was a name change to Albany River Rats.
In their second season in the American Hockey League they won the Calder Cup , but they reached the playoffs again after the 1999/2000 season in the 2006/07 season .
As of the 2006/07 season, the River Rats were the Carolina Hurricanes ' farm team , and the Colorado Avalanche was also one of the cooperation partners at times .
In January 2010 it was announced that the franchise was about to be sold and that it would be relocated to Charlotte , North Carolina . On February 10th, the sale to MAK Hockey, LLC of Charlotte was completed. After the end of the 2009/10 season , the club was relocated to Charlotte and took over the name of the previous ECHL franchise, the Charlotte Checkers . The venue for the franchise is the Time Warner Cable Arena .
