Jānis Ķipurs

Jānis Ķipurs (born March 3, 1958 in Kurmene , Aizkraukles rajons ) is a former Latvian bobsleigh driver who started for the Soviet Union .

At the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary , he and his brakeman Vladimir Koslow won the gold medal in the two-man bobsleigh. In the big sled he and his team won the bronze medal. Ķipurs benefited from the Soviet Union's efforts in the 1980s. An artificial ice rink was built in Sigulda, his Latvian homeland . In addition, the Soviet bobsleighs, the so-called "Russian cigars", were among the leading designs.
