Alexander Jurjewitsch Subkow ( Russian Александр Юрьевич Зубков ; born August 10, 1974 in Bratsk ) is a former Russian bobsleigh pilot , luge rider and politician and today's sports official.

Career

Before his career in bobsleigh, Subkow was a luge competitor. In 1994 he won the doubles title at the Junior World Championships with Danil Tschaban . He took part in the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano and was there 20th in the singles. In the 1998/99 season he started in the Luge World Cup and finished 12th in the overall ranking.

After that, Alexander Zubkov became the most successful Russian bobsleigh pilot. He lives in Dmitrov and has been active in bobsleigh since 1999. Success came very quickly. He was active in both the two-man and four-man bobsleigh. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, he won the gold medal in both the two-man and four-man bobsleigh, which were later revoked for doping.

He usually achieved greater success with the big bob. In the 2002/03 season he was eighth overall in the four-man bobsleigh in the four-man bobsleigh and combined and with his pushers Alexei Seliwjorstow , Sergei Golubew and Dmitri Stjopuschkin won the bronze medal at the 2003 Bobsleigh World Cup in Lake Placid, the first Russian bob medal since the fall of the Soviet Union. The following season he finished second in the overall standings in the four-man bobsleigh behind André Lange . The Russian had his best season in 2004/05 . In the four-man bobsleigh, he won two World Cup races and came second five times and finally won the overall standings. In the two-man bobsleigh, he came second once and third three times and came third in the final score. In the combined classification he came second behind Martin Annen . At the World Championships , Subkows four-man bobsleigh, again in the line-up with Seliwjorstow, Golubew and Stepuschkin, won silver behind Lange. The 2005/06 season was similarly successful . Subkows won four times, including two for the first time with the little bob, two times he was second and third. He again won the overall standings in the big bobsleigh, only Pierre Lueders was better in the two-man, who only beat him by six points in the combined classification of both sleds. At the 2006 Olympic Winter Games of Turin Zubkov won with his Anschiebern Filip Yegorov , Seliwjorstow and Alexei Voyevoda the silver medal and had to turn just give Andre Lange struck. In the two-man bobsleigh, he just barely missed another medal in fourth place.

In December 2006, Subkow was seriously injured and was only able to start again in the World Cup almost a year later. He was able to build on his old successes and won three races in 2007/08 and was fourth four times. In the overall standings of the two-man bobsleigh competition, there was a third place in the end and a second place in the big sled. Subkow also won a silver medal in the four-man bobsleigh at the 2008 Bobsleigh World Championships in Altenberg and also won bronze for the first time in the small sled.

After the 2009/10 season he resigned from bobsleigh and in August became the Irkutsk Oblast Minister for Fiskultura , Sport and Youth. Due to his recall to the Russian national bobsleigh team in October 2010, Subkow was recalled from office.

At the 2011 World Bobsleigh Championship at Königssee, he won the world title in the two-man bobsleigh for the first time. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , he was both Olympic champion in the two-man bobsleigh with Alexei Wojewoda and in the four-man bobsleigh with Dmitri Trunenkow , Alexei Negodailo and Alexei Wojewoda. In the four-man bobsleigh, he received a private set of Swiss runners from the German bobsledder Manuel Machata, who was banned from competitions for one year by the BSD . Also Francesco Friedrich sat on the second day the same type runners one, but without success.

In the summer of 2014, Subkow was injured in a robbery and ended his bobsleigh career.

In May 2016, the New York Times published a report that there was a state-sponsored doping system in Russia ahead of the Sochi Winter Olympics. The newspaper wrote of at least 15 doped Russian medal winners, citing the director of the anti-doping laboratory in Moscow, Gregori Rodchenkov. He developed a mix of three different doping agents especially for Russian athletes and exchanged urine samples during nightly activities. One of the named athletes was Zubkov, who denied the allegations as did the Russian government. On November 24, 2017 , the International Olympic Committee stripped him of the medals he had won in Sochi and banned him for life. The International Sports Court upheld the ban. At the end of 2018, however, a court in Moscow decided that, contrary to the judgments of the sports court, Zubkov could continue to call himself Olympic champion . Due to this classification, he is still entitled to a lifelong pension.

After his active career, Zubkov became president of the Russian Bobsleigh Federation. The IBSF bobsleigh and skeleton world association suspended him at the end of 2018 because of his involvement in the doping scandal. At the beginning of 2019, Zubkov announced that he would rest his presidency until the matter was clarified.
