history

The first Europeans came in 1623 to collect taxes from the Buryats who lived there. The first Ostrog was built in 1636 at the confluence of the Oka and Angara rivers . The name of the place was derived from the ethnonym "Buryats".

The Angara-ITL forced labor camp near Bratsk was set up in 1947 as part of the Soviet gulag system with up to 44,000 people for the construction of the Baikal-Amur main line and other work. The Taischet – Bratsk railway was built from 1938 by the Western Railway ITL and from 1948 by prisoners of the Taischet ITL and See-ITL .

The energy of the Siberian rivers Ob , Yenisei , Lena and Amur was tamed in the 1950s and 1960s with numerous dams and used to build new industries. In 1952 it was decided to create a large reservoir near Bratsk and to build a 4500 MW power plant (see also " GOELRO plan"). The two were built from 1954 to 1966; During this time, the population of the place grew many times over.
