Valentina Vadimovna Popova
Valentina Popova Wadimowna ( Russian Валентина Вадимовна Попова ., Scientific transliteration Valentina Popova Vadimovna * 25. September 1972 in Bratsk / Siberia ) is a former Russian weightlifter.
Career
Valentina started doing gymnastics as a girl and then switched to acrobatics . In both sports, however, she did not achieve any outstanding success. After graduating from high school, she studied at the Moscow Institute of Physical Culture and Sports. After she married the former weightlifter Sergei Popov, the 1.64 m tall athlete, who now lives in Voronezh , also began lifting weights . Her husband also became her trainer. In 1997 she was accepted into the Russian national team and from 1998 she won medals at almost all major international events. At the 2006 European Championships in Władiławowo, Poland, where Walentina originally came in second, she was convicted of doping . She was disqualified and banned from international competitive sport for two years by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF). Valentina Popova's two-year ban would have expired on May 4, 2008. Shortly before, however, she was tested positive again during a training control. For this reason, the international weightlifting association has now banned her for life.
