Loutraki ( Greek Λουτράκι ( n. Sg. )) Is a Greek city about 4 km northeast of Corinth in the prefecture of Korinthia with about 11,500 inhabitants. It is the administrative seat of the municipality of Loutraki-Perachora-Agii Theodori .

The name Loutraki is derived from the Greek word for source. Within Greece, Loutraki is also famous for its spring water, which is bottled here on a large scale and sold across the country.

location

The mountains dominate the north, northeast and southeast of Loutraki. A monastery, Osios Patapios, is located on the Gerania Mountain about ten kilometers from Loutraki. From there you have a great view of the isthmus and the Gulf of Corinth .

history

About 3 km outside the city center there are remains of a Roman villa (Roman villa of Katounistra), which suggests that there was settlement at that time. The modern Loutraki can probably be identified with the ancient place Therma or Thermai ( ancient Greek Θέρμα, Θέρμαι ), which is mentioned in Xenophon .

In 1847, an announcement in Italy about the therapeutic benefits of bathing in Loutraki's natural hot springs caused an influx of settlers in the area, shaping the modern Loutraki. In 1928 Loutraki was completely destroyed by an earthquake and then rebuilt. A large park was created with the rubble from the destroyed houses by reclaiming land from the lake area. Another strong earthquake struck the area in 1981, but with less severe damage.

Worth seeing

Of the numerous churches in the village, the following are to be highlighted:

  • Agios Ioannis o Baptistis (St. John the Baptist)
  • Panagia Giatrissa, with a supposedly miraculous icon
  • Agios Fanourios
  • Isapostolos Kosmas o Aetolos

In addition, you can visit the monasteries Anastasis Christou (Resurrection of Christ) and Agia Marina with some art treasures.

Infrastructure

Loutraki is a mainly tourist town. The casino (Club Hotel Casino Loutraki) is one of the largest in Europe and is well known. The city has many schools, churches, banks, hotels and bathing facilities. The connection to Athens and Corinth is by bus and by a railway line (approx. 80 km), which was discontinued in 2011 as part of the austerity measures.
