history

Airship hangar

The ambitious plans envisaged a European aviation center under the direction of the airship pioneer Graf Zeppelin , who had acquired the site from the city in 1910. On September 9, 1911, Zeppelin landed the airship LZ 10 Schwaben on the site. The largest airship hangar in Germany at the time was built as early as 1912 . From 1914 war airships were built, production was stopped in 1917 and the hall was demolished in 1920 due to the Treaty of Versailles .

Sports facility

In 1924 the city acquired the site and built the land and water sports area Luftschiffhafen , where the general water sports exhibition took place in May 1925. The complex was opened in 1927. The then city garden and cemetery director Hans Kölle played a decisive role in the design . The result was a stadium for 13,000 spectators, a huge regatta course and an outdoor swimming pool. There were also football and hockey fields, a festival hall, a small-bore shooting range, boathouses, a marina, as well as playgrounds and restaurants. Today some of these buildings no longer exist or are in ruins.

From 1952 the athletes of the barracked People's Police and later the National People's Army (NVA) trained here . The ASK Vorwärts Potsdam was created . In the following years competitions in the stadium repeatedly invited the Potsdamers to visit. International athletics competitions were held here. The Children's and Youth Sports School (KJS) Potsdam was established in the late 1970s . A high-rise as a boarding school, a school building and a cafeteria were built. A swimming and athletics hall was also built. The stadium already had a tartan track during the GDR era . The GDR athletics championships in 1987 were held from August 20th to 22nd in the airship port. In 1990 the ASK Vorwärts Potsdam became the Olympic Sports Club Potsdam-Luftschiffhafen .

The southern part of the airship port was used by the East German Construction Machinery Combine (BMK East), including the Shedhalle , an original auxiliary building of the former airship shipyard. In the early 1990s, the East German Savings Bank Academy was built on this part, and in 2004 it was converted into the Potsdam Congress Hotel . It consists of three buildings whose shape is intended to stylize airships; the shed hall was integrated. The hotel will continue to be used for events of today's North-East German Savings Banks Academy and is also the seat of other educational institutions such as the Brandenburg Municipal Academy .

The Potsdam Fanfarenzug has been training in the stadium since the 1990s and preparing for international competitions.

There is an extraordinary flagpole on the promenade, it is that of the Berlin Reichstag .

On February 13 and 14, 1993, the German winter throwing championships for young people were held here.

In 2001 the European Athletics Championships for senior citizens took place here.

In 2005 a new ball game hall was built on the premises of the airship port, for which a badly dilapidated restaurant was demolished.

The stadium was renovated in 2005/06 so that the Ukrainian soccer team prepared for its World Cup appearance here in June 2006. The stadium serves as a training facility for the 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam . The association's office is also located at the airship port.

June 2007 helped the stadium to flourish again. First, the oval with start and finish was integrated into the Schlösser Marathon . After that the 3rd junior meeting of the OSC took place. This concerned the qualifications for the Youth World Cup and the qualification for the European Championship for U20 and U23 athletes.

On January 6, 2010, with the demolition of the gatekeeper's house, the expansion to renovate the Olympic base began. In April of that year, two asbestos-contaminated accommodations were torn down. On September 2, 2010 the foundation stone was laid for a new multi-purpose hall. It forms the focus of the conversion of the airship port into a leisure and competitive sports base. A total investment of around 33 million euros was planned. The old regatta house was also renovated in summer 2010. On January 18, 2012 the grand opening of the new multi-purpose hall called MBS Arena took place. The construction phase was overshadowed by two fatal accidents on the construction site.

From July 26th to August 1st 2010, the world championships for marching and show bands took place in the Luftschiffhafen stadium for the second time. A little later, from August 26th to 29th, the German all-around championships were held in the stadium.

In December 2013 the indoor swimming pool and the athletics hall were closed due to the risk of collapse.
