GDR athletics championships 1987
The East German athletics championships were in 1987 held for the 38th time and place from 20th bis 22. August for the first time in Potsdam airship port instead.
In the men's category, six athletes won their title in seven disciplines ( Kunze (5000 m and 10,000 m), Melzer (3000 m obstacle), Langhammer (rod), Beyer (ball), Schult (discus) and Michel (spear)) to defend the previous year, which in the women’s eight athletes ( Gladisch (100 m), Müller (400 m), Pippig (marathon), Busch (400 m hurdles), Drechsler (wide), Hellmann (discus), Felke (spear) and Behmer (heptathlon)) succeeded. With seven titles, SC Dynamo Berlin was the most successful team at the championships.
Sabine Busch with the world record in the 400-meter hurdles and Thomas Schönlebe with the European record in the 400-meter run provided the sporting highlights . The 18-year-old Ilke Wyludda achieved a new world record in the discus throw. Jens-Peter Herold in the 1,500 meter run and Uwe Langhammer in the pole vault set new GDR records.

Margin notes
Traditionally, successful athletes from previous years were ceremoniously bid farewell to the national team as part of the championships. On a last lap of honor they were led by Wolfgang Warnemünde .
