GDR Athletics Championships 1985
The GDR athletics championships were held for the 36th time in 1985 and took place from August 9th to 11th in the Leipzig Central Stadium. The championship served as the final dress rehearsal for the European Athletics Cup in Moscow a week later .
In the men's category, seven athletes ( Emmelmann (200 m), Schönlebe (400 m), Wessig (high), Beyer (ball), Schult (discus), Hohn (Speer) and Freimuth (decathlon)) won their title from the previous year to defend what five athletes ( Göhr (100 m), Bruns (1500 m), Oschkenat (100 m hurdles), Drechsler (wide) and Felke (Speer) as well as the relay from SC Motor Jena (4 × 100 m )) succeeded. With seven titles, ASK Vorwärts Potsdam was the most successful team at the championships.
On August 3rd, the women from SC Turbine Erfurt set a GDR record for club relays over 4 x 400 meters in the Heinz Steyer Stadium in Dresden .

Margin notes
Traditionally, successful athletes from previous years were ceremoniously bid farewell to the national team as part of the championships. Waldemar Cierpinski , Bärbel Wöckel and Thomas Munkelt were among the 60 athletes who finished their careers .
