Irina Meszynski , married Winkler, (born March 24, 1962 in Berlin ) is a former German athlete who - starting for the GDR - was successful in discus and judoka .

Life

In 1979 she became Junior European Champion , in 1982 and 1986 she took part in the European Championships without winning a medal. In 1987 she reached fourth place at the Universiade . In 1982 she was GDR champion (67.84 m).

Due to the GDR boycott, she could not start at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. But on August 17, 1984 it set a new world record in Prague with the width of 73.36 m . At the end of 2012 it was still sixth on the all-time world best list. Four years later she reached fourth place in the qualification of the GDR and was therefore not nominated for the Olympic Games in Seoul.

Irina Meszynski started for TSC Berlin , where she was trained by Werner Goldmann . In her competition time she was 1.76 m tall and 97 kg heavy. In the documents on state doping in the GDR that became public after the fall of the Wall , the name of Meszynski was found among the doped athletes.

In 1984 she was awarded the Silver Patriotic Order of Merit .

In 1989 she switched to judo . In 1990 she became the last GDR heavyweight champion and seventh at the European Championships in Frankfurt am Main. She studied law at the Humboldt University in Berlin and became a lawyer.
