Participants aged 19 or younger ( U20 for short ) according to the IAAF's definition of “junior” are eligible to start . On the women's side, the age limit up to and including the 1987 event was one year below ( U19 ). They were held for the first time in 1970 and have been held every two years since 1973. The forerunners of these championships were the European Junior Games, which were played in 1964, 1966 and 1968.
