Mark Lewis-Francis (born September 4, 1982 in Birmingham ) is a British sprinter and relay Olympic champion .

Career

He was already celebrating great successes in the youth field: in 1999 he became vice European champion in the 100 meter run , 1999 youth world champion over the same distance, 2000 junior world champion over 100 meters and with the 4 x 100 meter relay and 2001 junior European champion. Also in 2001 he ran the 100 meters in 9.97 s in Edmonton , but because of questionable wind measurements, the time was not included in the best lists.

In the adult area, too, he concentrated on the shortest sprint routes, 60 meters indoors and 100 meters outdoors. At the World Indoor Championships in 2001 in Lisbon he won bronze over 60 meters, two years later at the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham he was fourth. In 2002 he became vice European indoor champion over the same distance.

In 2004, together with Jason Gardener , Darren Campbell and Marlon Devonish, he won the gold medal in the 4-by-100-meter relay at the Olympic Games in Athens and at the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 2005 and the 2007 World Championships in Osaka Bronze relay.

At the 2006 European Championships in Gothenburg, he was fifth over 100 meters, and won gold together with the British relay.

At the European Indoor Championships in Madrid in 2005, he won the silver medal in the sprint. This medal was stripped from him after traces of cannabis were discovered and the IAAF issued him a warning. The British federation then banned him permanently from participating in the Olympic Games, but lifted this ban again in the summer of 2006 because his cannabis consumption did not serve to improve performance.

Mark Lewis-Francis has a competition weight of 86 kg with a height of 1.85 m. He starts for the Birchfield Harriers and trains under coach Steve Platt.
