Marian Jerzy Voronin (born August 13, 1956 in Grodzisk Mazowiecki ) is a former Polish athlete . With a height of 1.86 m, his competition weight was 82 kg.

Career

At the European Indoor Championships in 1975, Voronin made his international debut when he was 18 years old. A bronze medal in 1977 and fourth place in 1978 were followed by four European championship titles from 1979 to 1982. At the end of his career he was once again European indoor champion in 1987.

In 1976, Voronin competed in the Olympic Games for the first time . He reached the semifinals over 100 meters, and came fourth in the Polish 4 x 100 meter relay . Four years later at the Games in Moscow he was seventh over 100 meters and over 200 meters. With the relay he won the silver medal behind the relay from the Soviet Union.

At the European Championships in 1978 he won gold with the relay. Four years later at the European Championships in 1982 he was fifth with the relay, but won bronze over 100 meters. At his only world championships in 1983 he was sixth with the season.

At the request of the children, he received the international award as Cavalier of the Order of Smiles .

On June 9, 1984, Marian Voronin ran the 100 meters in Warsaw in 10.00 seconds and thus undercut the old European record set by Pietro Mennea near Mexico City. When Voronin set this record, he had been a fixture in the 100-meter run and in the shorter sprint over 50 or 60 meters indoors for years .
