Grodzisk Mazowiecki is a city in Poland in the Masovian Voivodeship about 30 km southwest of Warsaw .
history
The first Slavic settlements on the site of today's Grodzisk Mazowiecki existed as early as the 11th to the 13th centuries. The first permanent settlement emerged in the 12th century. The name of the place probably originated at that time. Grodzisko means something like fortified settlement. The first written mention comes from the year 1355: Tomasz Grodziski had a church built in the place. The town received its town charter on July 22, 1522 from Sigismund I. The town was owned by the Okuń family at that time. In 1623 the town became the property of the Mokronovsky. In 1655 the place was destroyed by the Swedes , and again in 1708. A cholera epidemic followed . In 1795 the place became part of Prussia and in 1807 became part of the Grand Duchy of Warsaw and in 1815 became part of the Congress of Poland . On June 14, 1845, Grodzisk Mazowiecki was connected to the rail network and thus had direct connections to Warsaw and Vienna . Nevertheless, the place lost its town charter in 1870. The first factory was built in 1881. In 1884 the first hydrotherapy institute was opened in the neighboring Jordanowice. During the First World War , the place was destroyed. In 1915 Grodzisk Mazowiecki was given city status back and three years later returned to the Polish borders. During the Second World War the place lost about 5000 inhabitants.
From 1975 to 1998 the municipality was part of the Warsaw Voivodeship .
