Mordechaj Bentov

Mordechaj Bentov ( Hebrew מרדכי בנטוב, Maiden name Mordechai Gutgeld ; * March 28, 1900 in Grodzisk Mazowiecki ; † January 18, 1985 in Mischmar HaEmek ) was an Israeli journalist and politician who held high government posts in several cabinets. He was u. a. in the Eschkol cabinet, Minister of Housing.

Life

Bentov was born in Grodzisk Mazowiecki, which then belonged to Russia and is now in Poland. He studied law at Warsaw University for two years . During this time he was co-founder and head of the Zionist youth organization Hashomer Hatzair . In 1920 he emigrated to the League of Nations Mandate for Palestine and continued his law studies in Jerusalem at the British law school , which was operated by the British Mandate Government.

In Palestine he joined the kibbutz movement , rose to a leadership position in Hashomer Hatzair, was a functionary of the Histadrut and the World Zionist Organization . In 1947 Bentow was a member of the Jewish Agency delegation to the United Nations . He was one of 37 people who signed the Israeli Declaration of Independence on May 14, 1948 . In 1943 he founded the daily Al HaMishmar , which appeared until 1995.
