The Grasshopper Cup is an annual squash tournament for men organized by the Grasshopper Club Zurich . It takes place in Zurich , Switzerland and is part of the PSA World Tour .

history

In 1979 the first GC Cup was held. In the final, Norman Ingledew and Colin Fletcher faced each other. After that, the GC-Cup was held every year as a professional tournament on a world-class level. First as an invitation tournament, later as an official tournament of the world association: in 1999 the GC-Cup was held for the first time as a professional tournament with prize money of 11,000 US dollars. In the two following years, too, it took place with unchanged prize money.

After 2001 there was a break until the 2012 season, before the fourth event took place with prize money of 25,000 US dollars. Steve Buchli, Vice President of the Grasshopper Club Squash Section, was the initiator of the new edition. Together with Mark David Meyer and Michael Baer, both members of the GC Squash Club, he succeeded in reviving the GC Cup. The aim was and is to establish the GC Cup in the long term. After the relaunch in 2012, the 2013 edition was upgraded to the International 35 category with total prize money of 35,000 US dollars. In 2014, the tournament already belonged to the International 50 category and was endowed with 50,000 US dollars. For the first time, the tournament was held at a new location in Zurich, the ewz substation Selnau. A glass court and grandstands were set up for the spectators in the halls. A broadcast via PSA Squash TV also took place for the first time. In 2015 the tournament moved to the foundry hall at Puls 5 in Zurich, and the prize money was increased again to 70,000 US dollars.

Grégory Gaultier has been the only one who has won the tournament twice since 1999. Before that, Chris Dittmar , Neil Harvey and Gamal El Amir succeeded several times. Daryl Selby and Olli Tuominen have already been in the final of the tournament twice.
