Mohamed Elshorbagy , alternative spelling Mohamed El Shorbagy , (born January 12, 1991 in Alexandria ) is an Egyptian squash player . He became world champion in 2017 , vice world champion in 2012 and 2014, and world champion with the Egyptian national team in 2011.

Life

Mohamed Elshorbagy grew up in his native Alexandria before he attended Millfield School in Somerset in England . He then studied mechanical engineering at the University of the West of England in Bristol . His younger brother Marwan Elshorbagy is also a squash player.

Career

Mohamed Elshorbagy was already extremely successful in the juniors. In 2008 and 2009 he won the U19 junior world title against Aamir Atlas Khan and Ivan Yuen . In the following year he won his first title on the professional tour in India and has consistently climbed the world rankings ever since. With the Egyptian national team he became world champion in Paderborn in 2011 . At the 2012 World Cup in Doha , Mohamed Elshorbagy first reached the final, which he lost to Ramy Ashour . The following year he was able to reach the semifinals at the World Cup . At the Qatar Classic 2013 he defeated the reigning world champion Nick Matthew and won a tournament in the World Series for the first time . His second title at the World Series followed in Hong Kong in August 2014, followed by his third title at the US Open shortly afterwards in October . By winning the title in Philadelphia, he had the first world rankings for the first time on November 1st. At the 2014 World Cup , he reached the final for the second time, in which he was defeated again by Ramy Ashour in five sets. In the 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons , he won five World Series tournaments in a row. In the world rankings he set Ramy Ashour's previous record of 1872 points with a point average of 2150 points. After winning the tournament in el-Guna in April , he increased this record again to 2240 points. In June 2017 he won the PSA World Series Finals for the first time . In the same year he became world champion in individual for the first time . In the final, he prevailed against his younger brother Marwan in five sets. So far, Elshorbagy has won 41 titles on the PSA World Tour.
