Jonah Barrington , MBE (born April 29, 1941 in Morwenstow , Cornwall , England ) is a retired Irish squash player .

Career

Jonah Barrington was born in Cornwall, England, but played singles for Ireland throughout his life. His greatest successes are his six titles at the British Open , which at the time were considered to be the unofficial world championship. He won the tournament for the first time in 1967 against Aftab Jawaid and defended the title in 1968 against Abdelfattah Ahmed Aboutaleb . In 1969 he missed the finals, but won titles three to six from 1970 to 1973. He defeated Geoff Hunt twice , as well as Gogi Alauddin once and Aftab Jawaid again. In 1980 he became British champion after beating Gawain Briars in the final .

With the British national team , he took part in the World Cup in 1967 and 1969 . Both times he was runner-up with the team.

In 1993 he was inducted into the World Squash Hall of Fame for his achievements in squash . His son Joey Barrington was also a professional squash player.
