Gawain Briars (born April 4, 1958 in Witney ) is a former English squash player and official.

Career

Gawain Briars was active as a squash player between 1976 and 1989 and reached fourth place in February 1986, his highest place in the world rankings.

With the English national team he took part in the World Cup in 1981 , 1983 , 1985 and 1987 . In 1983 the team reached the final against Pakistan , but Briars lost, like his teammates, his game against Qamar Zaman in four sets. At European Championships he was with the national team in 1978, 1979, 1982 and 1986 European champions.

From 1979 to 1988 Gawain Briars was eight times in the main draw of the individual world championship. His best performance was reaching the semi-finals in 1985 . He was clearly defeated by Ross Norman in three sets. In 1979 and 1982 he won the British championship.

After retiring in 1989, he studied law at Cardiff University and worked as a lawyer from 1994 . On October 1, 1999, he took over from John Nimick as managing director of the Professional Squash Association . He held this post until his resignation on March 31, 2008.
