The defending champion was Ramy Ashour , who defeated Mohamed Elshorbagy in five sets last year . Ashour came as a big favorite, this season he had won all tournaments in which he participated. He reached the semi-finals at the World Cup, but had to give up in the game against Nick Matthew due to injury. This moved Matthew into the third world championship final of his career, in which he met the French Grégory Gaultier . Gaultier, vice world champion in 2006, 2007 and 2011, defeated Mohamed Elshorbagy in the semi-finals. After a 2-0 lead and a 2-2 equalization in the meantime, England's Matthew won the final with 11: 9, 11: 9, 11:13, 7:11 and 11: 2. He became world champion for the third time after 2010 and 2011.
