The 13th World Squash Championship for Men ( English 1989 Men's World Open Squash Championship ) took place in October 1989 in Kuala Lumpur , Malaysia instead.

The point-a-rally counting method was introduced . So far, nine points had to be achieved to win the set, whereby only the server could score. With the new method of counting up to 15, the returning player also scored a point for winning the rally for the first time.

Defending champion Jahangir Khan was eliminated in the semifinals against Chris Dittmar , to whom he lost in five sets. Dittmar met Jansher Khan in the final , who had won all of his previous games 3-0. After trailing 0-2, Khan won the final game with 10:15, 6:15, 15: 4, 15:11 and 15:10. This was his second title after 1987 . Meanwhile, Chris Dittmar lost his third world championship final. In 1987 he lost to Jansher Khan, in 1983 he lost to Jahangir Khan.
