1976 World Squash Championship

The first squash World Championship for Men ( English 1976 Men's World Open Squash Championship ) was held from January 31 to February 7, 1976 in London in the UK instead.

It also corresponded to the British Open 1976 , which means that both titles were played in one competition. The British Open had previously been considered an "unofficial" world championship. A total of 64 players took part in the tournament, 41 of whom came from outside Europe. The winner received a cash prize of £ 1,900 .

In the first final in the history of the men's world championship, Mohibullah Khan and Geoff Hunt, who was seeded at two, faced each other. Khan had defeated the top seeded Qamar Zaman in five sets in the semifinals , while Hunt defeated Gogi Alauddin 3-1. Hunt won the final game 7: 9, 9: 4, 8:10, 9: 2 and 9: 2. The playing time of the final was 2 hours and 10 minutes.
