Defending champions from the last previous event from the 2009 season were Nick Matthew and Rachael Grinham . Matthew managed to successfully defend his title in third place. In the final he defeated Ramy Ashour 11: 9, 11: 4 and 11: 8 and thus won his third title at the British Open after 2006 and 2009. Rachael Grinham, however, was eliminated in the second round against Joelle King . The winner was world number one Nicol David , who, apart from one lost set against Joelle King in the quarter-finals, did not lose a set throughout the tournament. In the final she defeated Nour El Sherbini 11: 6, 11: 6 and 11: 6. After 2005, 2006 and 2008, this was Nicol's fourth tournament victory at the British Open.
The field of participants in the men's competition consisted of 32 players, seven of which were reserved for qualifiers. The eight best players were seeded. In the women's competition there were also 32 players, 16 of whom were seeded. Of the other 16 places, eight were reserved for qualifiers. Per Wildcard received Adrian Waller and Alison Waters a starting place in the respective main field.
At the tournament, the following prize money and world ranking points were paid out or credited for reaching the respective round. Players who entered the main field from qualification received the specified qualification points in addition to those for reaching the respective round. Otherwise the amounts are not to be understood as cumulative. The total prize pool was $ 150,000 for the men and $ 95,000 for the women.
