Borja Golán Santín (born January 6, 1983 in Santiago de Compostela ) is a Spanish squash player .

Life

Borja Golán married his long-time girlfriend Chelo Suárez on June 22, 2013 in Santa María de Sar . The couple have two daughters.

Career

Borja Golán started his professional career in 2002 and was already in the top 50 in the world rankings in December 2003. At the beginning of 2007, he broke through the top 20, before he achieved his best career position for the time being in April 2009 with rank ten. Immediately beforehand, however, he sustained a serious injury to his right knee in the final of a PSA tournament in Bogotá against David Palmer , which is why he had to take a nine-month break. It was not until 2012 that he was able to re-establish himself in the top 20 of the world rankings. During his career he reached the final of the European Championship four times . First he lost to Grégory Gaultier in 2006 and 2015 and in 2012 to Olli Tuominen , before he won his first title in 2016 against Grégory Gaultier. He won another title in 2018 , while losing to Raphael Kandra in the final the following year . With the Spanish national team he took part in world championships in 1999 , 2005 , 2007 , 2011 , 2017 and 2019 . His best placement at a world championship was reaching the quarter-finals in 2012 in Doha . He took part in the European Championships over 20 times with the team and was runner-up with them in 2019 . In November and December 2013, he moved up to eighth and seventh in the world rankings, with which he reached a new record. At the Hong Kong Squash Open 2013 he moved into the finals of a World Series tournament for the first time. In February and April 2014, he achieved a new record with sixth and fifth places in the world rankings. Golán is the record winner at the Spanish championships with 16 titles won between 2002 and 2018 .
