Datuk Nicol Ann David (born August 26, 1983 in Penang ) is a former Malaysian squash player . She is the record world champion with eight titles and has been number one in the world rankings for nine consecutive years.
Life
Nicol David is the daughter of Ann Marie, a teacher with Chinese ancestry, and Desmond, an engineer with Indian ancestry. She also has two sisters. She graduated from secondary school ( Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia ) with seven ones. The University of Nottingham awarded Nicol an honorary Master of Arts in 2007 . Due to her sporting successes, David has also received numerous national awards and honors. She has been voted Malaysian Sportswoman of the Year nine times. In 2019 she received an honorary doctorate in sports science from Science University Malaysia .
Career
Nicol David started playing squash when he was five. In her junior career she won numerous tournaments, including the world championship title in 1999 and 2001. She won her first title on the professional tour on February 28, 2000 at the Finnish Open . Since then Nicol David has won 81 titles on the WSA and PSA World Tour and has stood in 21 other finals. In 2005 she won the Active World Championship against Rachael Grinham for the first time and defended this title in 2006 against Natalie Grinham . While she was denied the finals in 2007, Nicol David won all world titles from 2008 to 2012 . With her victory in 2011, she became the sole record holder, replacing Sarah Fitz-Gerald . In 2014 she won her eighth title. With the Malaysian national team, she won bronze three times between 2006 and 2010 at the biennial team world championships. In 2014 she was runner-up with the team. She won the prestigious British Open five times.
In January 2006, Nicol David became the first Asian woman to climb to number one in the world rankings. She lost the position to Vanessa Atkinson a month later , but regained the position in August 2006. From October 2007 to March 2009 Nicol David was unbeaten, winning 56 games in a row. From August 2006 to August 2015 Nicol David was at the top of the world rankings, nine years in a row. Raneem El Weleily replaced her in September 2015.
In addition to her world championship titles and countless tournament victories on the professional tour, Nicol David was also able to celebrate successes at other major events. At the Commonwealth Games she won silver in 2002 and bronze in 2010 in mixed with Ong Beng Hee , in 2010 and 2014 she also won the gold medal in singles. She also won gold in singles at the World Games in 2005 , 2009 and 2013 . Nicol David was also very successful at the Asian Games : In singles, she won five gold medals ( 1998 , 2006 , 2010 , 2014 , 2018 ) and one silver ( 2002 ), with the Malaysian national team she also won team gold in 2010 and 2014 . At the Asian Championships, she won eight individual and four team titles. She won the title at the Malaysian national championships in 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2017.
In 2011 she was inducted into the World Squash Hall of Fame . In February 2019, she announced her end of career at the end of the season and finally played her last professional game at the British Open in May.
