The Star is a daily newspaper published in Malaysia . It appears in a paid paper edition and a free online edition. The newspaper is a member of the Asia News Network and belongs to the Star Media Group Berhad. The majority of this is owned by the Malaysian Chinese Association .

history

The first edition appeared on September 9, 1971. At first, The Star was only available in the Penang area . The January 3, 1976 edition was available for the first time in all of Malaysia. In 1976 another office was opened in Kuala Lumpur , which in 1978 became the newspaper's headquarters. The current headquarters of the newspaper in Petaling Jaya opened in 1981.

Until 1987, the newspaper's reporting was considered liberal. This orientation led to the revocation of the newspaper's license during "Operation Lalang" (Operasi Lalang) initiated by Mahathir bin Mohamad . Mahathir bin Mohamad suppressed voices critical of the government and began to consolidate his power. From March 1988 the newspaper appeared again, but the reporting was now much more pro-government.

With a circulation of 250,000 copies, the newspaper is now the most widely read paid newspaper in Malaysia. The free online edition is also the most widely read online newspaper with over 100,000 readers. The newspaper's success put other Malaysian newspapers under pressure. The New Straits Times also switched to the tabloid format , in which The Star also appears, in order to win readers again.

The majority of the newspaper is owned by the right-wing conservative Malaysian Chinese Association. This is the third largest party in the Barisan Nasional Coalition, which ruled Malaysia .

expenditure

The newspaper currently appears in five regionally different editions. Two editions appear in the northern regions of the country ( Kedah , Kelantan , Penang , Perak and Perlis ), one in Sarawak and two in the rest of the country.

While the main part of the newspaper covers regional, national and international news, different features appear every day . The "StarBytz" part, which appears on Mondays, deals with information technology issues, the "R.AGE" part, which appears on Tuesday, deals with lifestyle and trends, while the "Dots" part, which appears on Sundays, contains news and reports from international partners of the newspaper.
