The Malaysian Chinese Association ( MCA ; Chin.马来西亚 华人 公会 / Abbreviation: 马华公 会; Mal. Persatuan China Malaysia) is a right-wing conservative political party in Malaysia that represents the Chinese population. It participates in the government as one of the three major parties of the Barisan Nasional coalition . The party leader is Chua Soi Lek .

influence

Together with the larger United Malays National Organization and the smaller Malaysian Indian Congress , the MCA has a major influence on the politics of the country.

With the party's holding company Huaren Holdings , it also controls five newspapers: The Star , Malaysia's best-selling newspaper, Sin Chew Ji Poh , the best-selling Chinese newspaper and the smaller Chinese newspapers China Press , Nanyang Siang Pau and Guang Ming .

In the 2004 election, the party won 15.5% of the vote, 31 of the 219 seats in the Malaysian parliament . In the 2008 election it won 10.3% of the vote and thus 15 of the 222 seats.

founding

The MCA was founded on February 27, 1949 out of a need to save the Chinese in Malaya from the repatriation that has been pushed by the British since the largely Chinese-backed communist revolt.

Right from the start, the MCA's functions went far beyond those of a political party: it built houses, provided humanitarian aid, promoted the development of new villages and promoted education.
